4.问答题Free trade is an economic policy under which the government does not interfere with trade. No tariffs are applied to imports or exports, and people are allowed to trade goods and services as they please. Supply and demand dictates the prices for which goods and services sell and are the only factors that determine how resources are allocated in society. Under a free trade system, there are no trade barriers. There is free access to markets and market information, and there are no government-imposed monopolies. The following are opinions from both sides. Read the excerpt carefully and write your response in about 300 words, in which you should: 1. summarize briefly the opinions from both sides, and then 2. give your comment. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Those who support free trade believe that it allows companies to come by raw materials and lower prices, which, in turn, results in lower prices on the open market. Supporters also believe that the levels of employment in a nation are determined by the monetary policy of that nation and not the trade policy. Additionally, when people must compete for a profit, they produce better products and are more motivated to increase their education and knowledge because these increases come with personal benefits. On the contrary, many believe that the government should dictate prices and impose more taxes on imports and exports. Critics often believe that many outsourced jobs are a result of free trade practices; and regulating trade could keep companies from finding cheaper labor and lower cost overseas. There are also concerns with the social burden of limited job security if companies put too much effort into looking for cheaper labor and lower cost. Critics feel that this results in a more worried, cautious public that is less likely to spend and invest in the economy. This is certainly not an advantage when the world economy is already in recession.

  • 第5题:

    问答题
The overuse of modern technologies in recreational activities makes human beings less creative. Do you agree or disagree? Write a composition of about 400 words on this topic.

    正确答案:
It is universally acknowledged that modern technologies are widely used in our everyday entertainment activities, providing joy and happiness for all. We enjoy kaleidoscopic TV programmes using signals received from satellites; we play music and show films on complex hi-fi stereos; and an increasing number of people surf the Internet every day for information and fun. Under these circumstances, many fear that the overuse of modern technologies in entertainment might result in the gradual loss of human creativity, as man grows to rely almost entirely on machines and high-tech inventions to work entertaining miracles. Honestly, I regard this point of view as downright wrong.
To begin with, it is precisely man's creativity that has made all the modern technologies possible and available, which in turn leads to their creative application in entertainment. Their wide application does not necessarily mean that man is losing his creativity, but simply indicates that this creativity has all along been turned into reality and put to use.
Secondly, rather than stunting man's imagination, the overuse of modern technologies actually enables man to be more and more creative. For instance, Dream Works, the famous American film company, has been designing and producing cartoons using computer technology. From the uni-dimensional The Prince of Egypt to the most lifelike Shrek, whatever one can imagine, it can be created by that computer, together with human intelligence and imagination.
Thirdly, history has proved that wide application of technologies in recreational activities has not affected human creativity. As a matter of fact, human beings have extensively used modern technologies to entertain themselves since the 1950s. However, we find so far no evidence which shows that man's creativity is declining. Instead, we never fail to find new creations appearing in quick succession.
Finally, the development of modern technologies depends on man's creativity. TV sets, CD players, computers and all sort of high-tech appliances are invented and developed by man. And his boundless imagination and endless thirst for more joy and fun will always inspire him to invent better technologies and then enjoy new varieties of entertainment.
To sum up, the fuss about how the overuse of modern technologies might be making people lose their creativity is totally unnecessary. For man, as a ceaseless explorer, will always develop new ways of fun using new types of advanced technologies.

Dad said, “No doubt, the groundnut has many uses. Yet, it has one valuable quality. This small nut is not like those good-looking apples, peaches and pomegranates, which hang their colorful fruits on the branches and invite admiration. The little peanuts bury themselves underground and remain unearthed until they’re ripe. If you happen to see a groundnut plant crouching there, you cannot decide at only whether it has fruit or not. You can only know this by getting into touch with it.”
We all said yes. Mother also nodded her head. Dad continued “So, you should learn from the groundnut and be useful people instead of those grand or beautiful ones.” I followed, “Then a person should be helpful and not just seemingly grand or decent?” Father concluded, “That’s what
    I expect of you.”

It is said that Zhou Guoping’s essays are very much favored by female readers, and I think, that has much to do with such a liking for making effective communication with the reader. Such an attitude has set him to an equal footing with his readers. For the modern people whose soul is becoming more and more closed to the world, emotional intercourse is no easy matter, almost becoming a luxury. Now we have a writer who can express freely and thoroughly what is in everyone’s mind yet not in everyone’s words, naturally, he will be identified emotionally with the readers, especially the female readers.
