1.问答题Free trade is an economic policy under which the government does not interfere with trade. No tariffs are applied to imports or exports, and people are allowed to trade goods and services as they please. Supply and demand dictates the prices for which goods and services sell and are the only factors that determine how resources are allocated in society. Under a free trade system, there are no trade barriers. There is free access to markets and market information, and there are no government-imposed monopolies. The following are opinions from both sides. Read the excerpt carefully and write your response in about 300 words, in which you should: 1. summarize briefly the opinions from both sides, and then 2. give your comment. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Those who support free trade believe that it allows companies to come by raw materials and lower prices, which, in turn, results in lower prices on the open market. Supporters also believe that the levels of employment in a nation are determined by the monetary policy of that nation and not the trade policy. Additionally, when people must compete for a profit, they produce better products and are more motivated to increase their education and knowledge because these increases come with personal benefits. On the contrary, many believe that the government should dictate prices and impose more taxes on imports and exports. Critics often believe that many outsourced jobs are a result of free trade practices; and regulating trade could keep companies from finding cheaper labor and lower cost overseas. There are also concerns with the social burden of limited job security if companies put too much effort into looking for cheaper labor and lower cost. Critics feel that this results in a more worried, cautious public that is less likely to spend and invest in the economy. This is certainly not an advantage when the world economy is already in recession.

2.问答题So many high school graduates have no clues what they want to pursue as a career as they head off to college. So, here’s the question: How many times have you changed your major(s) while in college and what prompted the change(s)? The following are opinions from all walks of life. Read the excerpts carefully and write your response in about 300 words, in which you should: 1. summarize briefly the opinions in the excerpts; 2. give your comment. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.Never Changed Claire | High School Teacher: I actually never changed my major. I declared elementary education immediately and stuck with it. I thought I wanted to minor in math, but before I even took a single math class, I ended up switching to English. Aside from student teaching and a long term sub position in 5th grade immediately following graduation, I’ve actually NEVER taught elementary school. I went ahead and took the Texas exam to get certified k-12 and I’ve only taught high school since. Sometimes I wish I had just done secondary education. Sadly, I don’t actually think any of my education classes in college affected the way I teach—experience has really been the best class I’ve had. Kevin | Accountant: I never changed my major in college! I knew exactly what I wanted, where I was going, and what I ultimately hoped to achieve after graduation with my AAS Degree in Business Management/ Accounting, I went directly to work in my chosen profession and never looked back! It served me well for about twenty-five years. Murphy | Middle School Teacher: I never changed my major in college, but I did not declare a major until the university forced me to. I majored in Political Science simply because it interested me. Of course, when I did declare this major everyone, especially my patents, asked me what I was going to do with it and my answer was always that I wasn’t sure. I ended up receiving a teaching credential two years after receiving my B.A. in Political Science and have been teaching for the last 26 years. Changed Dastice | Clerk: I changed my major from Psychology to Sociology. I still minored in Psych, and also in Women’s Studies. My only drive in changing majors was that I enjoyed the classes more. I figured if I stuck with what I enjoyed then a career would somehow emerge from it once I got my degree. Knowing what I know now, however, I probably would have majored in something like business or law. After graduating with my degree I ended up working jobs that didn’t even require a college education. Experience was far more valuable, I was told. Jenny | College Student: I, for some reason, never knew majors were a huge deal and could be almost as important as your life. I started out as an arts and Spanish major. I then realized the program my school offered for the education major took care of 4 classes I would have to take for my MA. I dropped the art major and went into the education major. My last semester came and I was at a crossroads: take the final course to complete my major in education or the class to complete my Spanish major. I do get a little upset thinking I was only one class away from another major. Gaha | Writer: I changed it once. I started college at eighteen and a little naive as to the working world. I chose to major in Business, not sure why, in fact I don’t think I really even knew what it entailed. It wasn’t until the onset of my junior year that I came to an epiphany that I had only take a couple of business classes because they bored me out of my mind. After taking a look at my transcript, realizing that I was totally into foreign languages and literature, I decided to get into writing. And a new writer was born!

4.问答题To help, or not to help? That has become a dilemma in modern China. According to a recent survey by China Youth Daily, 76.1 percent of the respondents say that our current society provides a “bad environment” for good people doing good deed. The following article is about the prevalent fear of helping old people in China. Read it carefully and write your response in about 300 words, in which you should: 1. summarize briefly the article; 2. give your comment on this phenomenon. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Lately, China’s Ministry of Health issued guidelines on how to handle cases of elderly falling. But instead of addressing the worrisome legal liability issue, it focuses mainly on medical consequences of a fall and offers technical solutions to different fall scenarios, while also telling people to overcome embarrassment and psychological fear of helping. This has further inflamed citizens who feel in a dilemma between wanting to help, and having fear of being taken advantage of for their kindness. Falling down is a leading cause of death for Chinese citizens aged 65 and above, according to Yang Maowei, Associate Professor of the First Hospital of China Medical University. However, in recent years, there have been frequent reports of such deaths in public places with no one helping the victims, Yang said. It seems that Chinese people have become reluctant to help because they worry that the person they help may later turn around and sue them, as that is what’s been happening a number of times in recent years. As a consequence, several elderly have been left to die in the streets with people passing by or watching, but not helping them. One line in the guidelines that particularly irked netizens said, “whether or not to lend a hand depends on the situation.” After the Ministry’s guidelines came out, Sina Weibo conducted a poll, asking people whether they are still willing to help an elderly who has fallen, considering the Ministry’s guidelines. Of the 5,031 who voted, only 20 percent said yes, while 43 percent said no, and the remaining 38 percent said, they’re not sure. Some people left comments expressing their inner conflicts and disillusionment over China’s sliding moral values: “I dare not help, but I’ll run to a public phone booth to call 120, the emergency number in China, and ask for an ambulance.” “I can’t even protect my own safety. How can I have the ability to take care of others? It’s really funny!” “To put it frankly, it reflects the degeneration of society’s morality. The culture has no direction, the morality has no bottom line, and the trust between people, and between people and the government is too low.” “Unless I were Bill Gates, I would help for sure.” “I would certainly help before. Now I’m really a bit afraid.” “In today’s Chinese society, traditional values and virtues have been eradicated completely. No matter what guidelines are issued, when one really stands at a critical point, the law will not protect the poor people.” “There’s no way out. The state educates us this way, and now it turns around to accuse us of having no morality. Isn’t that ridiculous? Whether to help is not a moral issue, but the crux of China’s current education” “At present, China’s social values are lost, and morality is ruined to the point of national doom.”

With the amazing technological development of computer and of the Internet, virtual games played on the Internet are becoming more and more popular. Many claim that playing games teaches us about life. Do you agree with this view?

    正确答案:
Playing certain games can teach us about life. For example, some educational games are designed to teach us about science, geography, sociology, etc. Games of chance can help us to experience and accept disappointment. However, I think this majority of modern-day games are based on fantasy and they cannot teach us much about life.
Nowadays, young people seem to favor computer games. The ones they like best either tend to distort reality or to promote fantasy. The fantasy games are full of aliens, lethal robots, walking dead people, or monsters. A good example is the game, “Resident Evil”. It is all about a virus that kills people and turns them into walking zombies. The player scores points by destroying the zombies with certain weapons. Other games, like “DOA 2” and “Counter-strike” distort reality by allowing the player to beat up or kill other people without suffering any consequences. Many games actually glorify violence or make it look like fun. Some racing games allow you to run over people and score points. I doubt that anyone can learn about lire through playing these games. In fact, many juvenile delinquents commit crimes without fully understanding what they have done and without having any idea of severe punishment. It is a pity that they generally regard their acts as means of fun because they mistake the real world for the fantasy world.
Another reason that modern-day games cannot teach us about lire is that they tend to be addicting. That is to say, they actually distract you from going outside and experiencing life. Many middle school and high school boys and university students spend numerous weekend hours glued to their computers, playing the latest fantasy game. They really should be outside, socializing, exploring their surroundings and learning about life. These modern day games actually promote the addiction. For example, most “shooting games” give you only a few “lives” but they incorporate countless play levels and episodes. It forces you to play an infinite number of hours as you attempt over and over again to reach the end of the game. All the while, the world is passing you by.
Can playing games teach us about life? Certain ones can. However,I think the majority of modern—day games actually do the opposite. They either distort reality or they keep you from experiencing it.

And some of us bought seeds, others prepared the land and still others watered it. In a few months, we actually had a harvest!
Mother said, “How about giving a feast this evening to celebrate the harvest and invite your Daddy to have a taste of our newly-harvested peanuts?” We all agreed. Mother made several peanuts-based dishes, and told us that the feast would be held in the thatched pavilion on the peanut plot.

    问答题
Recently a group of college girls have aroused a heated debate in the United States because they wore flip-flaps when visiting the White House. While the girls think their choice was ok, many criticized them of being too disrespectful. Here in China, a boy student sued a female classmate who sat in front of him in a important examination because she wore too little, which distracted him so much that he failed in the exam. Do you think universities students now have sufficient awareness of what is proper to wear? Do you think university should make an explicit dress code for students? Write a composition of about 400 words on this topic. You should supply a title for your composition. In the first part of your writing you should present your thesis statement, and in the second part you should support the thesis statement .with appropriate details. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or a summary. Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a toss of marks.

    正确答案:
A Dress Code Is Necessary In the 1960s and 1970s, Chinese people used to wear clothes of the same style in dull color. Since the reform and opening up, people started to wear clothes in more and different styles and colors, and this change has been viewed as a symbol of the progress made in China. But despite this trend, several universities have made quite strict requirements about what to wear on campus. Many students naturally disagree. After thorough reflection, however, we may find that a dress code is necessary both to maintain a good study environment and to safeguard the future development of students.
First of all, a strict dress code can avoid distractions so that students can focus better on their study. On the one hand, when only certain types of clothes can be worn on campus, students, especially those girl students, will not spend too much time thinking about competing via the latest fashion, and will focus better on their courses. On the other hand, a dress code can help prevent too much distraction from the opposite sex. College students are at the age when they are easily attracted by the opposite sex, so improper dresses may make students of the opposite sex unable to focus on study. For example, there used to be a report that a boy student sued a girl sitting in front of him in an important exam for distraction because she wore so little that he could not focus on his test paper.
Secondly, a strict dress code can show respect for teachers and classmates. Several anthropologists have pointed out that the way one dresses on a certain occasion demonstrates one's attitude to it. That is, if one dresses formally, one is taking the occasion seriously; if one dresses very casually, one is not attaching much importance to the occasion. Teaching activities, whether in small classrooms or in large lecture halls, are quite formal occasions and deserve much formality. We might have all seen some students coming to class in slippers or shorts. In this way, they are not showing respect for their teachers and their classmates. This mentality is certainly harmful to a positive learning environment.
Most importantly, a strict dress code can teach students the importance of proper dressing in the future. When students start working after graduation, they must understand that in their working places, there is a strict dress code, either explicit or implicit. Breaking this code may put them at a disadvantage. Similarly, in various social occasions out of their working places, there is a strict dress code, and failure to follow it will lead to undesirable results. Recently a group of college girls were widely criticized, because they wore flip-flaps, which belong to the beach, to the White House. If the college had practised a strict dress code, this would not have happened.
Therefore, university administrators have the duty to make and enforce dress codes on campus if they want to help students focus on study, cultivate a proper learning environment or teach students proper manners in the society. If they ignore this seemingly unimportant issue, students may neither study well nor behave well, and then they are not really turning out to be the talents that the society needs.

    问答题
Inheritance tax is a tax which many countries levy on the total taxable value of the estate of a deceased person. Inheritance tax is paid by the inheritor of the estate or by the person in charge of its assets. In most cases, if the estate is left to a charitable organization or a surviving spouse, no inheritance tax is due. In China, inheritance tax does not exist. Should inheritance tax be introduced to China? The controversy that has raged over levying inheritance tax in China currently shows little sign of abating. Opponents of inheritance tax typically refer to it as “death tax.” They argue first that concern over burdening their children with this tax may lead elderly to make unwise investment decisions late in life, and that it may also discourage entrepreneurship earlier in life. Opponents also claim that morally it should be only the choice of the person who earned the money what should be done with it, not the government. They see taxing wealth at death as a kind of forced income redistribution that goes against the market economy. Proponents of inheritance tax say that it helps prevent consolidation of wealth in the hands of a few powerful families and is a basic building block of the nation’s system of taxation. They also feel that inheriting large sums without tax undermines people’s motives to work hard in the future and, thus, undercuts the principles of the market economy, encouraging people to become idle and unproductive, which hurts the country overall.

    正确答案:
    【参考范文】
Should Inheritance Tax be Introduced to China? An inheritance tax is a tax paid by a person who inherits money or property or a levy on the estate of a person who has died. Many countries have inheritance tax, while China does not. Whether China should levy inheritance tax has become a hot topic of discussion. Supporters hold that it helps prevent the wealth from being always in the hands of a few powerful families. Inheriting large sums without tax weakens people’s enthusiasm for work, encouraging people to become lazy and unproductive, which is not conducive to the whole country. However, opponents argue that this tax may result in unwise investment decisions late in life, and discourage entrepreneurship earlier in life. It is a kind of forced income redistribution, ignoring the right of people earned the money.
From my points of view, inheritance tax should not be introduced to China. Firstly, it is a violation of human rights. In any country that has recognized the private property rights, a person’s private property can be handled without violating others all a person likes. The inheritance tax violates the rights of the people to dispose of their property. Secondly, inheritance tax will encourage abnormal consumption, conspicuous consumption of rich people, further intensifying contradictions and conflicts among social members. It may stimulate the rich to spend their money excessively before death and lead to hostility to the rich. Thirdly, inheritance tax will reduce the enthusiasm of entrepreneurs, exacerbate capital flight, economic migration and impede investment and capital inflows, inhibiting economic development. It may drive wealthy people to move assets out of the country or emigrate in order to avoid the tax, resulting in capital loss and brain drain.
To summarize, inheritance tax might not be an effective enough tool to narrow income disparity. Therefore, other measures are needed if the government wants to ensure a more equitable distribution of wealth in society.

The heads of several U.S. intelligence agencies have the same outlook on the country’s security. During a Senate hearing on Tuesday, they said that in the next three to six months, it is certain that there will be an attempted terrorist attack on the U. S. An attempt, though, doesn’t mean an actual attack. In fact, the CIA director used the failed, Christmas Day bombing plot as an example. None of the intelligence leaders, which included the FBI director and the director of national intelligence, talked about a specific threat. But they did say that their top concern is al Qaeda, the terrorist group connected to the Christmas Day plot. The hearing also focused on cyber-security; protecting against online attacks. Those are seen as a growing threat. and one that the intelligence community needs to address. The national intelligence director said that the U.S. is not prepared for the kinds of cyber attacks it could face. Senator Dianne Feinstein, the chairwoman of the committee holding the heating, agreed that the country does need to develop an overall, cyber- security strategy.

    正确答案:
    1.which改为where或在which前加in 此处需要一个状语从句,而不是which引导的定语从句。
    2.as改为than 上文more必须与than搭配,构成比较状语从句。
    3.So改为But/However/Nevertheless 根据上下文可知这里是转折关系。
    4.去掉about
    explain是及物动词。
    5.you改为they 此处的先行词是the kids。
    6.like改为as
    such as是固定搭配。
    7.takes改为gives
    give rise to是固定搭配,表示“引起,导致”之意。
    8.differ改为distinguish
    differ表示“有区别”,这里要用distinguish,表示“区分,找出……的差别”。
    9.others改为other
    the other和上文的one构成固定搭配,表示在两者中“一个……;另外一个……”。
    10.harmful改为harmless,这里是双重否定表肯定,若用harmful则意义相反,不能与上文形成对比关系。
