    Part A

Directions: Read the following four texts. Answer the questions below each text by choosing A,B, C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET I. (40 points)

    Text 1

We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. "Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen? .... When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?" "And Paul—why didn't pick up that he was friendly just because I had a car?" When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it' s too late.

Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don' t really listen we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, "You' re a lucky dog." That' s being friendly. But "lucky dog?" There's a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn't see it himself. But bringing in the "dog" bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that the doesn't think you deserve your luck.

"Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for," is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn’t important. It' s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven' t got a date for Saturday night.

How can you tell the real meaning behind someone' s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice?

His posture? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people to you may save another mistake.

    21. This passage is mainly about______.

    A) how to interpret what people say

    B) what to do when you listen to others talking

    C) how to avoid mistakes when you communicate with people

    D) why we go wrong with people sometimes

    正确答案:C

Q3: What important differences do you think there are between, selling to consumer abroad and selling to domestic markets? (Why?/Why not?)

    正确答案:
A: Possibly cultural diversity is one of the most important differences between selling to consumer abroad and selling to domestic markets. Different nationalities have different expectations when it comes to how employers and employees should behave. National culture is perhaps a major obstacle to making global businesses effective. National values are directly linked to organizational decision-making. Most international human resources managers will experience these expectation differences firstly..
B: There are several factors that influence decision-making, such as recruiting new employees, promoting staff, fixing salary levels, and making staff redundant. All these factors are concerned with cultural values. It is safe to say that cultural values have a great effect on management decision making. For example, one relationship is is established on the basis of shared expectations, which are common to employees of the same nationality. In America, typical of this is the belief that individuals should receive salary gains but doesn’t have to share them with lower-performance colleagues. But in some other countries, this will get nowhere. Nevertheless, it is only with this awareness can employees from diverse nationalities appreciate their differences and build mutual understanding.

    Dear Mr. Walker,
I am writing to draw your attention to a new $ 5,999 flat-panel LCD computer screen with built-in speakers which I purchased from Hewlett-Packard branch in Beijing on 28 May 2006. It is very unfortunate that only after using less than ten days, some problems have occurred. I regret to tell you that the flat-panel LCD computer screen malfunctioned. In addition, the music system does not work the way it should making a lot of noise. What’s worse, even one speaker is out of order.
On 6 June only a few days outside the ‘replacement for product fault’ window, the built-in speakers on the unit failed to work properly. Although I called the sales Rep immediately, not until four days later did a technician arrived to check the problem. After a 20-second test (by the way, he is using my borrowed earphones to test the unit), I was told that the Hewlett-Packard screen speakers were not functioning! However, no information was given to me about what was to be the solution to this annoying problem. Clearly the screen has a multimedia purpose, yet with these audio problems most of the enjoyment was lost. A technician named Hewlett-Packard’s senior officer who guaranteed that they were doing ‘everything’ possible to remedy the situation. I was told to call him ‘any time’, and they would do ‘anything’ to help me out. Sixteen days has passed after reporting the problem, nothing was heard from the Sales Rep or Hewlett-Packard.
As one of the famous computer producing manufacturers, your company-Hewlett-Packard is enjoying high prestige among customers around the world. Yet I don’t understand why I should get such an inferior quality product and such a poor after-sales service. According to the terms of guarantee of your company, it is your company’s responsibility to have the computer screen with built-in speakers repaired. I would appreciate it if you could repair the computer screen as the earliest possible time, or exchange it for a better model. Otherwise, I will have no choice but to ask for solution at the Consumer Association. Your prompt attention to this letter will be appreciated.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
    Yours sincerely,
    Peter Stephen

正确答案: I’d like to talk about a Spanish painter and sculptor Picasso. He is best known for the Cubist movement, and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and worked in. I highly appreciate his works like the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d’Avignon and Guernica, a portrayal of the German bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. I began to know him when I was in elementary school. At that time I liked paintings very much and I bought a collection of famous paintings. I saw Picasso’s painting Guernica and was greatly shocked by his talent and profundity. He’s different from other painters and his works are very surreal which leaves you space to imagine the theme of his work. From his painting I can view my life from a new perspective and that is why I appreciate him. He inspires me.

Practice 5 You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic: If a product is of good quality and meets people's needs, people will buy it, Therefore, advertising is unnecessary and is no more than a type of entertainment, To what extent do you agree or disagree? You should write at least 250 words.

    正确答案: 【参考范文】
With the popularization of media, many manufacturers take advantage of advertisement to publicize their products. Whether you like it or not, advertisements have become an indispensable part of modern entertainment. Therefore, some believe that they have more entertaining functions instead of genuine promoting objectives. As far as I am concerned, I cannot totally agree with this argument.
Admittedly, as more advertisements tend to invite celebrities like movie stars and pop singers to be their image spokespersons. But the questions are: who pays the bill in advertising areas and what is the intention?
The producers invest great sums of money in the advertisements with the only ultimate purpose of selling more products at a higher price. Although some advertisements have entertaining elements, the original intentions can never change. To begin with, by effective communicative means, the advertisements can attract more audience to enlarge the customer base. In other words, people get to know a product from advertisements on channels like TV or posters on buses. The second level is more important. Advertisement can leave audience with a deeper impression. With the great help of modem media, people can easily sink into a public effect. Consumers are apt to follow trends formed by ads. Last, there is possibility that some ads may contain some false information of the product in order to exaggerate the functions and cover some shortcomings. As a saying goes, “There is no reasonable consumer, but only crazy buyer tempted by advertising.” Ads easily lead to irrational shoppers.
In conclusion, advertisements are a vital element in the commerce for selling products or services. But the entertaining elements should be judged with sense and reason.
