China has the greatest population in the world and a large pool of research workers, yet it has not produced a single Nobel Prize winner so far. What has caused this situation in your opinion? State your opinion in about 160 words, and write it on the answer sheet.

    正确答案:
We can often hear the news that an American scientist or a Poland researcher get the Nobel Prize for certain inventions or findings, but China, with the greatest population in the world and a large number of research workers, yet has not produced a single Nobel Prize winner so far. There are various reasons for that.
First, there are serious problems in the educational system in China. The Chinese education has long been examination-oriented, which means that students are just forced to swallow the existing knowledge, without thinking much about it. Thus, the researchers think that the systems fostered are lacking in a sense of creativity.
Second, there is too little academic communication between China and the outside world. Due to some historical reasons, China had been isolated from the outside world. Thus it lags behind other countries in science and technology. So what scientists in China are doing now is mainly a repeat of their western counterparts.
Realizing the problems, the government has made many adjustments: the quality-oriented education is gradually taking the place of the examination-oriented one and a great number of leading technology and experts from the foreign countries are brought in. So, it’s certain that in the near future there will be Nobel Prizewinners in China.

    问答题
In the past few decades,“generation gap” has become a quite popular phrase, signifying the barrier between parents and children. But what has caused the barrier, why do people living together disagree with each other? Write a composition of about 400 words on the following topic:Who Has Dug The Generation Gap? In the first part of your writing you should present your thesis statement, and in the second part you should support the thesis statement with appropriate details. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or a summary. Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

    正确答案:
Who Has Dug the Generation Gap? Since its invention, the phrase generation gap has spread all over the world in almost an instant. In the past few decades, although human beings are striving toward more common goals, the gap between parents and children seems to be widening. It is high time that we thought about the causes of this prevailing trouble.
The most important reason is that parents and children hold different values. With the constant development of technology, social values are also undergoing continuous changes. Because parents and children belong to quite different times, they naturally belong to different value groups, and this in turn leads to the barrier between different generations. For example, our parents living in the 1960s think that people should cherish their membership in their groups, and should adapt themselves to their groups, but we emphasize individual values and are ready to leave our groups at any moment in search of a better one. It is unlikely for people holding different values to agree on everything in life, and the barrier is, therefore, also unavoidable.
Another important reason for the generation barrier is lack of communication. A good talk can sometimes dissolve the disagreement between people with different values, but the trouble is that there is not enough communication. With the ever increasing pressure in work and life, parents are spending less effort and time with children; the children, faced with heavy study load or various distractions such as IV plays and computer games, are also spending less time with their parents. This results in a lack, or an inability, of communication when it is necessary.
Besides these two general reasons, there may be some special cases. According to a recent report, about 5 per cent of generation gap results from irresponsible parents. Some parents, especially those without good education, tend to evade the duty of raising and caring their children. The same report also reveals that about 3 percent of the problem results from problematic children who consistently refuse parents~ help. This type of cases represents only a small portion, but the problem is often more serious.
In a word, except for some special cases, barriers come into being either because the two parties involved embrace too different values or because they are not talking to each other often enough. After finding out the reasons, we may know that it is wrong to blame parents or children for the barriers, and we should mainly encourage communication, for if parents and children can talk to each other more, barriers will have less opportunity to stay.

    Organ Donation and Transplantation

1 Organ donation(捐献)and transplantation(移植)refers to the process by which organs or tissues
from one person are put into another person's body.
2 The number of people needing a transplant continues to rise faster than the number of donors.About
3,700 transplant candidates are added to the national waiting list each month. Each day, about 77 people
receive organ transplants.However,18 people die each day waiting for transplants that can't take place
because of the shortage of donated organs.
3 There are rio age limits on who can donate.Newborns as well as senior citizens have been organ
donors. If you are under age 18 , you must have a parent's or guardian's consent(同意).If you are 18 years or
older, you can show you want to be an organ and tissue donor by signing a donor card.
4 Many people think that if they agree to donate their organs, the doctor or the emergency room staff
won't work as hard to save their life. This is not true. The transplant team is completely separate from the
medical staff working to save your life. The transplant team does not become involved with you until doctors
have determined that all possible efforts to save your life have failed.
5 If you need an organ transplant, your doctor will help you get on the national waiting list.Your name
will be added to a pool of names. When an organ donor becomes available, all the patients in the pool are
compared to that donor. Factors such as blood and tissue type, size of the organ, medical urgency(紧急)of
the patient's illness , time already spent on the waiting list, and distance between donor and recipient(接受
    者)are considered.

    Paragraph 5 _________
    A: Quality of Donated Organs
    B: Benefits of Organ Donation
    C:Distribution of Donated Organs
    D:Quality of Donor Medical Care
    E:Age Limits for Organ Donation
F:Status of Organ Donation and Transplantation

第三段第一句“There are no age limits on who can donate.”
There 15 a great demand for donated organs.
从第三段第二句“Newborns as well as senior citizens have been organ donors.”得出正确 答案是D。
结合选项,从搭配上看sign后面只能跟a donor card;从文章第四段中“The transplant team does not become involved with you until doctors have determined that all possible efforts to save your life have failed.”也能看出答案是C。
根据最后一段中“When an organ donor becomes available, all the patients in the Pool are compared to the donor.Factors such ao blood and tissue type…are considered.”可知F是正确答案。

Directions: Please write an essay in about 150 words entitled “Water Shortage” based on the following outline. The first sentence has been given. Outline: (1)Water shortage has become much more serious than before. (2)The chief reasons for water shortage. (3)My suggestions.

    正确答案:
Water shortage has become much more serious than before. According to the statistics. 2.2 billion people in 62 countries are facing the shortage of fresh water in the world; there is 300 million people in 26 countries are severely short of water. It is expected that other eight countries will join the 26 countries for severely lacking water in 2010 and 2.7 billion people around the world will face the problem of severe water short-age in 2025.
The chief reason for water shortage is the low efficiency of water using. As we can see, some water can be reused. For example, we can use the water that we have used to wash clothes, to rinse the toilet. As statistics show, one ton of water will be used while one ton of paper is produced. But with the use of recycled water, the consumption of water can be reduced to half ton. Obviously, with the use of recycled water, the water use efficiency will increase, thus a great lot of water can be saved. But unfortunately, in most of the countries, many companies, particularly in some industries that consume masses of water every day, such as paper making and steel making, haven’t built up their recycle system of water. Lots of water is directly drained without recycling everyday.
So how to build up more recycle system of water has become most pressing business that can solve the water shortage problem.

    单选题
As for the writer, what can be concluded from the talk?
    A

He believes driving on a road as dull as a motorway leads to drivers’ sleepiness.

    B

He thinks it a pity that the issue of sleepiness has not been properly reported.

    C

He agrees with the government bodies that reliable statistics cannot be obtained.

    D

He shares with the police that sleepiness has caused 20% of motorway accidents.

    正确答案: D
    解析:
事实细节的找寻和判断。根据录音中提到的“Driving on a road as dull as motorway makes worse sleepiness in a driver who is already sleepy”(在沉闷的高速公路上开车使已经昏昏欲睡的司机感到更加的困倦),可知在说话者看来在沉闷的高速公路上开车是导致司机困倦的重要原因。因此A项内容与录音原文表达意思相一致。
    【录音原文】
Sleep laboratories around the world are finding that an alarming number of drivers on motorways may be falling asleep at the wheel. Although researchers have difficulty in knowing for certain whether an accident has been caused by sleepiness, it appears that a driver who is on the road between 4 a. m. and 6 a. m. is about 10 times as likely to have a sleep-related accident as someone who is driving in the middle of the morning or early in the evening. Some British police forces have become sufficiently concerned to launch campaigns to alert the public to the danger. Major motor manufacturers such as Ford and Renault are investigating ways of incorporating sleepiness detectors and alarms into their vehicles.
However, British government bodies responsible for road safety have not initiated any studies into the problem of sleepy drivers on motorways. The Department of Transport claims that it is “aware of the problems”, but does not regard it as a high-priority issue and is not planning to support any relevant research apart from a general study on “driver behaviour”.
Unfortunately, the issue is clouded by the fact that many motorways accidents that might be caused by sleepiness are categorized under other headings, such as “inattention”, “failed to look or see other vehicle” and “misjudged speed/distance”. Figures collected in the 1970s by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory list the cause of 20 percent of all road accidents as “perceptual errors”. “Fatigue” was specified in only 2 percent of cases. However, few investigators inquire further to discover just why a driver was not attending, failed to look or made errors in perception. For various reasons, including the fear of prosecution and possible difficulties with insurance claims, drivers are reluctant to admit to falling asleep, but are more willing to admit to “inattention”. When these rather vague responses are examined thoroughly, sleepiness often emerges as the true culprit.
Driving on a road as dull as on a motorway makes worse sleepiness in a driver who is already sleepy. But how can we tell if an accident on a motorway has been caused by sleepiness? There are some strong pointers. If an accident involves only one vehicle, which runs off the road into the central crash barrier, a tree or a bridge, then sleepiness is likely to be the cause, especially if there are no skid marks or other signs of braking. A driver who is alert to impending crash grips the steering wheel and suffers different injuries from someone who is asleep and holding the steering wheel loosely. This pattern of injury, combined with an absence of skid marks on the road, also suggests that the driver was asleep in accidents where one vehicle runs into the back of another, especially if it occurs where traffic is light and vehicles are consequently well-spaced on the road.
