Living in a Big City or a Small Town With ample supply of medical resources, convenient public transportation, various entertainment activities and normally higher salary than that of elsewhere, big cities are rather preferable to some people.
However, big cities have their own disadvantages which make them inferior to small towns. Air pollution and noise pollution pose a threat to citizen’s health. Traffic congestions will also fill big cities with frustrated drivers, which add peril to driving. Therefore, some people choose to live in a small town.
Small towns, though not so developed and prosperous as big cities, are often peaceful as there are not many people and heavy traffic. People do not have to travel a long distance to work. In a small town, there is relatively more space for green belts, parks or gardens where people, can enjoy the fresh air. Unlike people living in big cities, those living in a small town will have greater chances of making acquaintances of one another in the neighborhood by leisurely exchanging greetings since they do not have to hustle and bustle all around.
I would choose to live in a small town. I love to spend my time walking in a place with more space, fresh air and greenness.

My Idea of Professional Ethics for a Scientist There is no denying that a distinguished scientist should not only be learned and creative but also have good professional ethics for the good of both society and the scientist himself. But what are good professional ethics for a scientist?
In my opinion, a scientist should possess the following qualities. First of all, an eminent scientist should make sure that his knowledge is used to bring benefits to the general public rather than to make his personal gains. He should devote himself to the advancement of technology, with the aim of raising the living standards of people and making our world a better place to live in. Secondly, as a respectable scientist, he should be on good terms with other scientists. Cooperation and mutual trust between scientists are very critical for scientific achievements. Thirdly, a good scientist should be honest and respect the work of others. Never should he copy from others or falsify research findings. Last but not the least, a scientist should be a responsible person. He should not make any hasty decisions. Once a decision is made he should shoulder its consequence.
In a word, an excellent scientist should have good professional ethics to win the respect of the people and contribute more to people’s benefits.

    Few Facts about Lies

What exactly is a lie?Is it anything we say which we know is untrue?Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you.You say"I wish I could help you but I'm short of money myself."In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don't want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie?
Professor Jereald Jellison of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying. According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a"white lie," such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks awful. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researchers say that men are more likely tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intention of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at:the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way.
Research has also been done into the way people's behavior changes in a number of small, apparently unimportant ways when they lie.It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying"I wish I were somewhere else now."They also tend to touch certain parts of the face more often,in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The tip of the nose is very sensitive to such changes and the increased pressure makes it itch (痒).
Another gesture which gives liars away is what the writer Demond Morris in his book Manwatching calls"the mouth cover".He says there are several typical forms of this, such as covering part of the mouth with the fingers, touching the upper-lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side of the mouth.Such a gesture can be interpreted as an unconscious attempt on the part of the liar to stop himself or herself from lying.
Of course, such gestures as rubbing the nose or covering the mouth,or moving about in a chair cannot be taken as proof that the speaker is lying. They simply tend to occur more frequently in this situation. It is not one gesture alone that gives the liar away but a whole number of things, and,in particularly, the context in which the lie is told.

    One research suggests that women________.
A:generally lie far more than men
B:tend to tell more serious lies than men
C:make more promises they can fulfill than men
D:are better at telling less serious lies than men

文章第二段指出“women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a‘white lie '” ,即女性比男性更善于撒善意的、不太严重的谎言。本段中间提到men are more likely tell more serious lies,男性会撒更为严重的谎言。所以选D。
本题答案参见第二段的最后一句“This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at"。政治家更擅长说严重的谎言。 C(生意人很少不信守自己的诺言)和文章内容不符,他们也撒谎,是为了谋取利润,D(女性会做出空虚诺)文章没有涉及,因此选A。

    B

    C

A catalogue will be given away if you spend more than$80.

选项C提到be given away 和more than$80分别与题干中free及over $80相对应。

Practice 1Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay entitled Living in the College Town. You can cite examples to illustrate your point. You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words.

Living in the College Town In recent years, college towns have been thriving across China as a result of rapid economic and cultural development. Students hold different views on living in these remote areas of their cities.
Many of them loathe the isolation from city life. They complain about the tedious experience of catching the shuttle bus to the outskirts every day. And what annoys them more is that they are detached from normal campus life and they find few teachers to interact with. However, quite a number of students argue that staying away from the bustling surroundings will eventually benefit their academic performance.
As one of the students living in a college town, I have deeply experienced the inconvenience and monotony. Therefore, some measures should be taken so that more attention can be given to the students in the college town. On the one hand, more cultural events and recreation activities can be launched. On the other hand, a closer teacher-student relationship should be established so as to strengthen their communication.

It is often believed that competition and cooperation are in opposition to each other. We are now living in a society of severe competition. Students need to compete for better schools; companies have to compete for better products and more customers. And there is constant competition for jobs, fame, and wealth and so on. Cooperation is often neglected by many people. Here I would like to say that both competition and cooperation play an important role in social progress.
Competition is the impetus of the constant development of the human society. The pressure of competition can force people to try their best and give people a sense of the pursuit of excellence. Without competition people would be satisfied with their present condition and society would not advance. A strong desire to succeed and do better than others inspires us to work harder. However, we also need to know the importance of cooperating with others. It’s unimaginable for an individual to live without society. In many cases, people need to cooperate with each other to overcome difficulties. Mere competition may lead to failure.
To succeed in life, we must learn that both com- petition and cooperation are indispensable. Competition will make us always be active to create while cooperation gives us the possibility of working together to overcome obstacles.
