2.4 Graham Smith is Operations Director of Catering Food Services (CFS) a £1·5 billion UK based distributor of foods toprofessional catering organisations. It has 30 trading units spread across the country from which it can supply acomplete range of fresh, chilled and frozen food products. Its customers range from major fast food chains, cateringservices for the armed forces down to individual restaurants and cafes. Wholesale food distribution is very much aprice driven service, in which it is very difficult to differentiate CFS’s service from its competitors.Graham is very aware of the Government’s growing interest in promoting good corporate environmental practices andencouraging companies to achieve the international quality standard for environmentally responsible operations. CFSoperates a fleet of 1,000 lorries and each lorry produces the equivalent of its own weight in pollutants over the courseof a year without the installation of expensive pollution control systems. Graham is also aware that his largercustomers are looking to their distributors to become more environmentally responsible and the ‘greening’ of theirsupply chain is becoming a real issue. Unfortunately his concern with developing a company-wide environmentalmanagement strategy is not shared by his fellow managers responsible for the key distribution functions includingpurchasing, logistics, warehousing and transportation. They argued that time spent on corporate responsibility issueswas time wasted and simply added to costs.Graham has decided to propose the appointment of a project manager to develop and implement a companyenvironmental strategy including the achievement of the international quality standard. The person appointed musthave the necessary project management skills to see the project through to successful conclusion. You have been appointed project manager for CFS’s ‘environmentally aware’ project.Required:(a) What are the key project management skills that are necessary in achieving company-wide commitment inCFS to achieve the desired environmental strategy? 4.2 Helen Bradshaw, a recent graduate with a degree in catering management, has spotted a market opportunity duringher first job with a large supermarket chain. She knows there is a growing market for distinctive, quality cakes in thebakery sections of the supermarket chains, as well as in supplying independent individual premium cake shops, andalso for catering wholesalers supplying restaurants and hotels.Helen is very determined to set up her own business under the brand name of ‘Helen’s cakes’, and has bought someequipment – industrial food mixers, ovens, cake moulds – and also rented a small industrial unit to make the cakes.Helen has created three sets of recipes – one for the premium cake shop market, one for the supermarkets and onefor the catering wholesalers but is uncertain which market to enter first. Each channel of distribution offers a differentset of challenges. The premium cake shop market consists of a large number of independent cake shops spreadthrough the region, each looking for daily deliveries, a wide product range and low volumes. The supermarkets aredemanding good quality, competitive prices and early development of a product range under their own brand name. The catering wholesalers require large volumes, medium quality and low prices.Helen has learnt that you are a consultant specialising in start-up enterprises and is looking to you for advice.Required:(a) Acting as a consultant, prepare a short report for Helen advising her on the advantages and disadvantageseach channel offers and the implications for a successful start-up. 单选题
According to the woman, what keeps The Journaland The Heraldfrom raising their prices?
    A

The scrutiny of the local authority.

    B

The readers’ protest against high prices.

    C

    Efficient staff in The Journal.

    D

The low price of The Times.

M: Have you seen this story in The Herald? It says The Times is closing down in three months’ time.
W: Gary, that’s good news, that newspaper is terrible. I won’t miss it.
M: What do you mean? The Times is the best newspaper in the city. If that closes, we’ll only have The Herald and that City Journal which is too awful for words.
W: You only like The Timesbecause it takes up to 20 pages every day with sports. This is a newspaper which puts the horoscopes on the bottom of the front page. I think that tells you how serious it is.
M: Come on. That’s hardly fair now. is it? Remember the campaign they did last year to save the children’s hospital. You can’t tell me you didn’t think that was a worthwhile thing to do。
W: They only did that because they knew it would strike a nerve with the average guy in the street. You know, saving a children’s hospital. It’s like the ultimate in populist journalism. Do you remember reading their article a couple of months before criticizing the local authorities wasting money on out-of-date healthcare facilities, including the very same children’s hospital? They have only ever written what they think will sell more newspapers.
M: Well, it obviously didn’t work if they’re closing, did it?
W: No. and thank heavens for that. The City Journalis a great paper and you don’t like it because it doesn’t devote 5 pages every day to baseball stats.
M: This is a baseball city. We’ve got a great team. Why shouldn’t we read about it? Where are we going to get the results now? The Journalputs all the results in one tiny box on the back page and The Heraldgives them maybe a half page. It’s almost as if they feel ashamed at having a successful team here. I just don’t see why people buy The Journal.
W: Err, maybe because it has authentic journalists working there, journalists who know something about what is going on in the rest of the country and the rest of the world. I think a newspaper needs to meet all the needs of its readers, not just those who like sports. The Journal did a great piece on famine in Africa last week, did you read it?
M: No. I can’t say I did. I think they should leave that stuff for the national papers or for the TV news. If I buy a local newspaper, I don’t want to read about the famine in Africa. Those articles are only written by the ambitious journalists who are fishing for jobs in the national press.
      W: Oh. you’re so cynical.
M: And another thing. What about the jobs section in The Times? That was one of the most useful parts of it. Three or four pages of good quality, jobs and always local. The Heraldhas one too…look, here on page 17…one page…and look, half of these jobs are on the other side of the state. Every business, every store in this city knows, if they want to employ someone, get someone to work for them, they have to place an ad in The Times. How are all these people going to get work now? This will absolutely wreck the local economy.
W: You certainly know how to exaggerate, Gary. Destroy the local economy, will it? I admit the jobs section was pretty good in The Timesbut one of the other two newspapers will just get the ads instead. That’s how things work. This city just isn’t big enough for three local newspapers and you know it. People only get them to see what’s on in town and to see who’s died.
      M: That’s so morbid!
W: It’s true. People use the TV or the Internet for everything else. It’s not like it used to be 10 years ago.
M: The Timeswas the cheapest of them all too. You can bet all the prices are going to go up.
W: Hmm, you could be fight. I think The Times’ low price was the only thing keeping The Journaland The Heraldfrom increasing their prices. I don’t buy a local paper that often to be honest. If I do get one, I find myself reading no more than a few pages anyway.
M: Well. If The Times really does close down, that’s my newspaper buying days finished. I think, in ten years’ time, nobody in this city will even buy a local paper. It’s a shame really, don’t you think?
W: My dad told me when he was a kid, there used to be 5 local newspapers in the city and two others serving only this comer of the state. But you know how it is, companies merge, everyone is looking for savings, efficiency and so on. Now we’ll only have two. It’s survival of the fittest.

    【录音原文】
Lenovo Group has agreed to pay US $1, 25 billion for IBM’s personal computer business, lifting China’s largest PC maker to third in global rankings and giving it a globally recognized brand.
Lenovo will pay US $600 million in cash and US $650 million in stock. Lenovo chief executive Yang Yuanqing said at a press conference in Beijing.
Lenovo will also assume US $500 million of debt. IBM will hold an 18.9 percent stake in Hong Kong-listed Lenovo after the acquisition, which is expected to be completed in the second quarter. The purchase vaults Lenovo from eighth place among PC makers, giving the company a leg up in a global market now dominated by US manufacturers Dell and Hewlett-Packard.
“It’s a good move for IBM,” said Jason Maxwell, an analyst at Los Angeles-based TCW Group, which owns IBM shares. “It fits with their decade-old strategy of disinvesting in those areas where they don’t have an advantage.” IBM sold its hard-disk drive business in 2002 after the technology behind the products became widely available and easy to copy, leading to depressed profits. The same thing has happened in PCs as consumers use new items such as mobile phones to access the Internet. IBM, which made its first PC in 1981 and won orders by catering to businesses, retreated from selling its Aptiva PCs to retailers in the US in 1999 and decided to sell over the Internet.
Lenovo, based in Beijing, will reap benefits of the world’s third most recognized brand—IBM’s brand name is worth US $53, 8 billion, according to a survey by Interbrand.
