单选题
In fisheries in general, when a large harvest is taken one year, there will be fewer fish available to be harvested in the following year, leading to decreasing yields of most fish species over time. The Maine lobster is an anomaly, however. Even though the vast number of lobster traps covering the New England coast pull in more lobsters every year, the number of lobsters in the water has shown no signs of decreasing. Which of the following, if true, most helps to explain the apparent anomaly concerning the number of Maine lobsters?
A

The decline of other fish species in the region has deprived the lobster of its natural food source of scavenged fish.

B

The bait in lobster traps provides abundant food for young lobsters, which are still small enough to swith out of the traps, leading to much higher survival rates among young lobsters than would be expected in nature.

C

As global warming heats the waters of the Atlantic coastline, the Maine lobster has extended its northern range to well past Nova Scotia.

D

The ever, increasing demand for lobsters in seafood restaurants and steakhouses across the country has driven a corresponding increase in the supply of the product.

E

The increased lobster harvest has resulted in many juvenile lobsters but very few breeding- age lobsters, which could result in a crash in lobster numbers in the near future.

Birds, fish and other animals move from one place to another place at a certain time. They move for different reasons: most of them move to find food more easily, but others move to get away from places that are too crowded. When cold weather comes, many birds move to warmer places to find food. Some fishes give birth in warm water and move to cold water to feed. The most famous migration is probably the migration of fish, which is called “salmon”(鲑鱼). This fish is born in fresh water but it travels many miles to salt water. There it spends its life. When it is old, it returns to its birthplace in fresh water. Then it gives birth and dies. In northern Europe, there is a kind of mouse. They leave their mountain homes when they become too crowded. They move down to the low land. Sometimes they move all the way to the seaside, and many of them are killed when they fall into the sea.Recently, scientists have studied the migration of a kind of lobster(龙虾). Every year, when the season of the bad weather arrives, the lobsters get into a long line and start to walk across the floor of the ocean. Nobody knows why they do this, and nobody knows where the go. So, sometimes we know why humans and animals move from one place to another place, but at other times we don’t. Maybe living things just like to travel.81. The reason for most of the animals to move is _____________________.

3.Text 3When prehistoric man arrived in new parts of the world, something strange happened to the large animals. They suddenly became extinct. Smaller species survived. The large, slow-growing animals were easy game, and were quickly hunted to extinction. Now something similar could be happening in the oceans. That the seas are being overfished has been known for years. What researchers such as Ransom Myers and Boris Worm have shown is just how fast things are changing. They have looked at half a century of data from fisheries around the world. Their methods do not attempt to estimate the actual biomass (the amount of living biological matter) of fish species in particular parts of the ocean, but rather changes in that biomass over time. According to their latest paper published in Nature, the biomass of large predators (animals that kill and eat other animals) in a new fishery is reduced on average by 80% within 15 years of the start of exploitation. In some long-fished areas, it has halved again since then.Dr. Worm acknowledges that the figures are conservative. One reason for this is that fishing technology has improved. Today’s vessels can find their prey using satellites and sonar, which were not available 50 years ago. That means a higher proportion of what is in the sea is being caught, so the real difference between present and past is likely to be worse than the one recorded by changes in catch sizes. In the early days, too, longlines would have been more saturated with fish. Some individuals would therefore not have been caught, since no baited hooks would have been available to trap them, leading to an underestimate of fish stocks in the past. Furthermore, in the early days of longline fishing, a lot of fish were lost to sharks after they had been hooked. That is no longer a problem, because there are fewer sharks around now.Dr. Myers and Dr. Worm argue that their work gives a correct baseline, which future management efforts must take into account. They believe the data support an idea current among marine biologists, that of the “shifting baseline.” The notion is that people have failed to detect the massive changes which have happened in the ocean because they have been looking back only a relatively short time into the past. That matters because theory suggests that the maximum sustainable yield that can be cropped from a fishery comes when the biomass of a target species is about 50% of its original levels. Most fisheries are well below that, which is a bad way to do business.31. The extinction of large prehistoric animals is noted to suggest that ________.[A] large animal were vulnerable to the changing environment[B] small species survived as large animals disappeared[C] large sea animals may face the same threat today[D] slow-growing fish outlive fast-growing ones

GUATEMALA CITY (Reuters) – A fish that lives in mangrove swamps(红树沼泽)across the Americas can live out of water for months at a time, similar to how animals adapted(适应)to land millions of years ago, a new study shows.

The Magrove Rivulus, a type of small killifish, lives in small pools of water in a certain type of empty nut or even old beer cans in the mangrove swamps of Belize, the United States and Brazil. When their living place dries up, they live on the land in logs(圆木),said Scott Taylor, a researcher at the Brevard Endangered Lands Program in Florida.

The fish, whose scientific name is Rivulus marmoratus, can grow as large as three inches. They group together in logs and breathe air through their skin until they can find water again.

The new scientific discovery came after a trip to Belize.

“We kicked over a log and the fish just came crowding out,” Taylor told Reuters in neighboring Guatgemala by telephone. He said he will make his study on the fish known to the public in an American magazine early next year.

In lab tests, Taylor said he found the fish can live up to 66 days out of water without eating.

Some other fish can live out of water for a short period of time. The walking catfish found in Southeast Asia can stay on land for hours at time, while lungfish found in Australia, Africa and South America can live out of water, but only in an inactive state. But no other known fish can be out of water as long as the Mangrove Rivulus and remain active, according to Patricia Wright, a biologist at Canada’s University of Guelph.

Further studies of the fish may tell how animals changed over time.

“These animals live in conditions similar to those that existed millions of years ago, when animals began making the transition(过渡)from water onto land,” Wright said.

    A. likes eating nuts

    B. prefers living in dry places

    C. is the longest living fish on earth

Twenty years ago,the gray whale was listed as an endangered species.
Some scientists think that the larger number of whales makes it hard to find enough food.More whales create more pressure on the food supply,a supply that some scientists say may have dwindled as a result of the warm waters of El Nino.
Most of the whales have been dead for many days before they are found and studied. This makes it hard to find the reason for death.

That's because 74% of fish sold at sushi venues in the US is mislabeled and often completely different than what's on the menu, according to a 2013 survey from the ocean conservation group Oceana.
But new technology could help make the seafood business a bit more transparent. Google is teaming up with Oceana and the aerial and satellite imaging nonprofit SkyTruth to launch Global Fishing Watch this fall, the New York Times reports. The initiative will track and analyze fishing boat practices using satellite technology and, ideally, help ensure that fewer fake or mislabeled fish are swapped in along the way.
Seafood providers are also investing in technology to reduce fraud. Boston seafood distributor Red's Best, for example, has increased transparency by selling fish with labels that buyers can scan with their smartphones to access a web page that provides details about the individual fish, including where the fish came from, the New York Times reports.
Even if a restaurant serves some real, correctly labeled fish, 95% of the 118 sushi restaurants surveyed by Oceana in cities including New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles had at least one faked sushi item on the menu.
Currently, the biggest culprits for fake sushi are snapper (92% misleadingly labeled) and tuna (71%). White tuna is often swapped for escolar, which is sometimes called the "Ex-Lax Fish, " according to Inside Edition, because it can cause intestinal problems.
Roughly 75% of fish labeled snapper isn't even from the snapper family. Because of the predominance of fraud in the supply chain, New York sushi restaurant Sushi Nakazawa refuses to serve red snapper because the risk of fake fish is too high.

What can we infer from this passage?( )

A.Many sushi restaurants refuse to serve some fish because of the risk of fake fish.
B.People have access to track the origins of fish sold in sushi shops.
C.Most fish sold in sushi stores is mislabeled but new tech can help to fix the problem.
D.Citizens in the US no longer trust the fish sold in sushi venues.

    答案:C
    解析:
    本题考查的是推理判断。
    【关键词】infer from the passage
【主题句】第2、3自然段That's because 74% of fish sold at sushi venues in the US is mislabeled and often completely different than what's on the menu, according to a 2013 survey from the ocean conservation group Oceana.
But new technology could help make the seafood business a bit more transparent.

Which of the following questions is answered according to the information given in the passage?
    A

What is the toxin used by the fish killer?

    B

    Who first discovered the organism?

    C

How does the fish killer paralyze fish?

    D

How many fishes can the organism kill each day?

最终当鱼类窒息而死时,然后它就attaches itself to the fish and begins sucking away at its flesh(附着在鱼身上并吸食其肉)。因此选C。

    解析:
事实细节的找寻和判断。录音中提到“上周经过伪装的武装分子绑架了一名德国石油工人作为人质”,紧接着便指出“A group calling itself the Movement for the Niger Delta People has claimed responsibility for that kidnapping”,其中该句的that kidnapping指的就是上周对一名德国石油工人的绑架事件。由此可知,该组织并非是此次绑架了15人的实施者。因此选项B表述错误。
    【录音原文】
Unidentified kidnappers snatched two Norwegian and two Ukrainian oil workers from a supply ship provisioning oil rigs in Nigeria’s petroleum-rich waters, officials said Wednesday. They were taken hostage late Tuesday from the vessel owned by a Norwegian shipping firm, Trico Supply, company spokesman Bjorn Endresen said in Norway.
Nigeria confirmed the latest violence against the oil industry in Africa’s petroleum giant and said negotiators had been sent to the restive Niger Delta region where most of the crude is pumped.
Endresen said there were 11 other crew members aboard the ship at the time of the kidnapping, but did not give further details. He rejected initial Norwegian media reports that a Briton was among those kidnapped. Norwegian newspaper VG also reported on its Website that the kidnappers were demanding a ransom.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Frode Overland Andersen said he could not confirm the ransom demand, but said the Norwegian Embassy in Abuja was working with local authorities to get more details on the abductions.
Last week, militants wearing camouflage uniforms took hostage a German oil industry worker, spiriting him away on a boat into Nigeria’s troubled oil-rich delta region. A group calling itself the Movement for the Niger Delta People has claimed responsibility for that kidnapping, but police said the group was unknown.
Militants have kidnapped oil workers to bargain for a greater share of the wealth from Africa’s largest crude producer. More than 30 have been taken this year, three from the oil-producing hub of Port Harcourt. The militants argue residents remain deeply impoverished, benefiting little from oil wealth while government officials and oil companies grow rich.

    解析:
录音中提到的珊瑚损失(coral loss)的严重后果包括“the collapse of reef fisheries, a reduction in tourism and increased coastal damage from hurricanes”,对应选项A、B和D的内容,因此选C。
    【录音原文】
Coral loss can have serious consequences, including the collapse of reef fisheries, a reduction in tourism and increased coastal damage from hurricanes. Coral decline also threatens the estimated 1 million species of fish, invertebrates and algae found in and around the world’s reefs. Several National Academies reports examine the environmental role of coral reefs and suggest ways to protect these and other marine resources.
