In children’s reading material and caricature, owl tends to be described as serious and clever. In dispute among birds and beasts, it is the owl that they regard as their judge and ask for advices in an emergency. Sometimes, people consider owl not practical and a little stupid, yet on the whole, it stands for the image of wisdom. But in Chinese, the figurative meaning of the word “owl” is quite different. Some people are quite superstitious: they are afraid of seeing an owl or hearing its sound; in their view, the mere sight of an owl or the sound of its hooting might cause people to be down on their luck. The phrase “Ye Maozi enter the house” in Chinese means the approach of bad luck. Ye Maozi actually refers to the owl.

    6.去掉equally或more。 equally和more不能连用。
    7.nevertheless改为also。

In Paris cocktail parties and buffet receptions of various kinds are great opportunities for people to meet each other and make friends with each other. Strangers can make acquaintance with each other on such occasions. Overseas Asians would like to respectfully present others their calling cards with their hands, even before they say hello to each other. And this seems to be an indispensable courtesy on their part. By contrast, most Frenchmen are not likely to do that when they meet. They may greet each other, and sometimes even have a casual chat before they leave. Only when they find they have something in common and want to further their relationship, will they exchange their calling cards. It seems rather embarrassing for them to be presented a calling card before opening their mouth.

We missed the glorious sunrise, the best season for which is the clear, sparkling autumn. But we did have our own pleasure—the sight of the waterfalls in the rain. They were, on our journey two days later, far less impressive; for the smaller cascades had disappeared and the big waterfalls had become small ones. Following the West Valley, we climbed many peaks and ridges, passed through the fragrant apple orchard, and lingered for a while by Black Dragon Pool. But for the afternoon train we had to catch, we would have stayed longer at the pool. There mountains and water combine to form a picture of harmony and infinite variety, a landscape with a beauty all it sows.

    问答题
Some people think that parents should plan their children's leisure time carefully. Others believe that children should decide for themselves how to spend their free time. Which opinion do you agree? Write a composition of about 400 words to state your view.

    正确答案:
Childhood is a decisive period in the process of one's growth. Therefore, many people think that parents should carefully plan not only their children's school education but also their spare time. Other people, however, argue that children should have the freedom to plan their own extracurricular life. On balance, I would side with those parents who respect children's freedom and independence.
If children have the freedom to make decisions on how to spend their spare time and develop their interests, they will gradually form a sense of responsibility and become more capable in the world. Take myself as a good example. My parents are like good teachers and helpful friends in my life. As I remember, they never excessively interfered with my life and always left enough freedom to me so that I could embark upon what I liked to do in my spare time. They quite understood that my weekdays were occupied with a heavy workload, and that only in my spare time I could have a change of pace. Meanwhile, although mutual understanding and tolerance were an important part of my childhood life, in no way does it mean that they spoiled me. They were austere teachers when I made mistakes, and helpful friends when I came across difficulties. Owing to their understanding, tolerance, guidance, and above all, love, I have grown up to be a person of self-confidence, optimism, and independence, ready to meet any challenges in my life. Without the free family environment that my parents carefully designed for me, I wouldn't have lived such a happy life.
On the contrary, some parents expect too much of their children, depriving them of all their independence and freedom. These parents would rather sacrifice their children's interests and happiness for nothing but good scores, thus resulting in serious misunderstanding between parents and children. Some parents even went so far as to plan their children's schedule, filling every minute with study task. In this ease, children are deprived of happiness because they are bound hand and foot by endless homework, numerous exams and boring evening or weekend classes. Furthermore, having no freedom to plan their own life, these children are more likely to become introvert, heavily dependent on their parents when they grow up. This will definitely affect their growth. For one thing, since they have no opportunity to develop their independent thinking and explore their potential, they will find it very difficult to adjust themselves to the competitive society. For another, confining them in an ivory tower will make it hard for them to communicate with others. This will affect their career development in the future because the communication between people plays a major role in the workplace, and is one of the most important elements in achieving career success. Obviously, parents' excessive interference with children's after-school life, if carried to the extreme, can cause serious damage to both their happy childhood and their career in the future.
To sum up, I believe that parents should leave enough freedom and privacy to their children with a view to cultivating their character. As long as parents allow their children the necessary freedom accompanied by careful guidance, their children will grow up to be independent, responsible and successful.

    【录音原文】
Improving Your Motivation for Learning English Hi, everyone. In today’s lecture, we will share the techniques for improving your motivation for learning English as a foreign language together. We used them all the time when we were learning English and we still use them when we need to boost our motivation in areas other than English.
Imagine you can talk to native speaker just like you talk in your first language. Imagine other people wanting to speak English as well as you do. Imagine the possibility of writing email to people from all over the world.
It is helpful to read an article about the advantages of knowing English well. There are a lot of articles on: Why learn English and English makes you feel good.
You should know that it is possible to learn English really well. Just look at other people who have done it.
First of all, remember that you are already good. You already know some English. That’s a big success! Now it’s time for more successes. Time starts using powerful methods of effective learning. Time to gain an impressive knowledge of English. Remember there is a lot that you don’t know. You are good, but your English probably isn’t perfect. You probably can’t understand English-language TV, read books in English, talk to native speakers easily, write letters without mistakes, etc. You should never think your English is perfect. Even if you are the best student in your class, always try to find your weak areas and work on them. When you’ve learned to speak English well, your problems will be quite small: punctuation, rarely used grammar structures, rare words, understanding “street language”. Right now, your problems are probably more basic: mistakes in pronunciation, small vocabulary, grammar problems with the present perfect tense and conditional structures.
Secondly, use your English whenever you can. This is very, very important. The more you use English, the more you will want to learn it. Because English is so popular, you can use it everywhere. You can use Google to find English-language websites with interesting information, you can watch American cartoons, you can play adventure games on your computer, you can read interesting books in English, or you can do other things that we write about. If you also use effective learning methods, your English will grow faster than you can imagine.
Thirdly, talk to people about English. This is a very simple method, but it is very effective. Here’s how it works: You usually talk about things which interest you. But the opposite is true, too. If you start talking about a boring subject, you will begin to get interested in it. Imagine you are studying a subject that you hate. You are bored and tired, but you have to pass the test tomorrow. If there are people near you, you have two options: you can tell everybody how much you are suffering or you can tell these people about the things you’ve learned. If you choose the first option, you will only feel worse. If you choose the second option, and start a conversation on the “boring” subject, you will begin to look at it in a totally different way. Suddenly it will become a subject worth talking about—therefore, an interesting subject. How can you begin such a conversation? If you’re studying English, you can surprise another person by talking to him or her in English. If there are no people near you, you can telephone or send an email message to your friend. What will your friends say? Probably they won’t be very interested, but it doesn’t matter! The important thing is this: After talking about English, you will study it with much more passion. Try it. If you can find a friend who is learning English and is on a similar level of skill, you will be in an excellent situation: you will have someone to talk about English with. These conversations will increase your interest in English, as explained in the previous section; learning English will be easier, because you will be able to discuss your problems with your friend; you will study English more, because you will want to be better than your friend. You should meet your friend regularly.
Then, don’t forget to spend some money on learning English. If you spend your money on something, you will want to use it. For example, if you buy an expensive tennis racket, you will probably go out and play tennis every day. This rule is also true for learning English. If you want to increase your desire to learn English, buy a new dictionary, all interesting English-language book, English-language cable TV, etc. The idea is simple: You paid for it, so you will want to use it, and you will improve your English. This method is helpful, because it gives you an impulse to start learning. For example, if you buy a dictionary of phrasal verbs, you will probably learn some words from it. Then you should try to use them. For example, write an email message with these words. This will increase your motivation, and you will learn more.
Lastly, remember that learning English requires action. We have said this many times. One small action is more powerful than reading hundreds of articles. Yes, we know it is very hard to do things, even if they are good for us. We humans are lazy creatures. That is why not many people speak English well. Still, we hope you can do the things we talk about in our English learning method—not only read about them. You will be successful only if you change something about your life. So don’t put it off. Begin now.
To conclude, the lecture has discussed the ways to improve the motivation for learning English. Hope all of you can bear them in your mind.
