Jay Chou was born on January 18, 1979, in Taiwan, China． He grew up with his mother, and was a quiet and shy kid． He didn’t do well in study, so people thought he would never be successful in life．

As a small child, Jay took a great interest in music．His mother sent lum to learn the piano when he was only three years-old He loved it and kept on practicing． When he was in high school, he could play the piano quite well． At the same time, he showed his talent for writing songs．

Henry, aged 48, is the managing director of Happy Home Ltd, an unquoted UK company specialising in interior

design. He is wealthy in his own right and is married to Helen, who is 45 years old. They have two children – Stephen,

who is 19, and Sally who is 17.

As part of his salary, Henry was given 3,000 shares in Happy Home Ltd with an option to acquire a further 10,000

shares. The options were granted on 15 July 2003, shortly after the company started trading, and were not part of

an approved share option scheme. The free shares were given to Henry on the same day.

The exercise price of the share options was set at the then market value of ￡1·00 per share. The options are not

capable of being exercised after 10 years from the date of grant. The company has been successful, and the current

value of the shares is now ￡14·00 per share. Another shareholder has offered to buy the shares at their market value,

so Henry exercised his share options on 14 April 2005 and will sell the shares next week, on 20 April 2005.

With the company growing in size, Henry wishes to recruit high quality staff, but the company lacks the funds to pay

them in cash. Henry believes that giving new employees the chance to buy shares in the company would help recruit

staff, as they could share in the growth in value of Happy Home Ltd. Henry has heard that there is a particular share

scheme that is suitable for small, fast growing companies. He would like to obtain further information on how such

a scheme would work.

Henry has accumulated substantial assets over the years. The family house is owned jointly with Helen, and is worth

￡650,000. Henry has a ￡250,000 mortgage on the house. In addition, Henry has liquid assets worth ￡340,000

and Helen has shares in quoted companies currently worth ￡125,000. Henry has no forms of insurance, and believes

Passage 1

Once an honored man was having a birthday party. His sons and servants were busy welcoming guests. A thief slipped into the house. He hid himself by lying face down on a beam in the ceiling of the hall where the birthday banquet was to be held. From there, the thief could look down upon the guests and see all the gifts of silks, jade, and jewels brought in. He tried to remember where these were put so that he could steal them after the party was over.

Later that evening, the host was looking at all his presents happily. He leaned over them with his back turned to the thief hiding on the beam. The thief was looking around the room so that he would be able to move quietly when the lights were off. As the thief hung his head over the beam it made a shadow on the floor.

The host did not show that he had seen the shadow. He called for his servant to set a table for one guest with the best food and drink. Turning towards the beam on which the thief lay, he bowed low and said, “Will the gentleman on the roof-beam now come down to have some refreshments?”

There was nothing else the thief could do but climb down. His host fed him well. After the thief had eaten his fill, the host gave him a bag of silver coins and begged him to make good use of them. Then the host saw the thief to the door and bid him good night.

Ten years passed, and again the honored man held a birthday party. Many visitors came to bring him presents. The man was very old by now and could not greet all the

guests. His grandson met the visitors at the door and invited them to dine with his grandfather in the evening. He then took the gifts in for the old man to see.

Towards the end of the day a stranger came, bringing gifts of gold and jewels. He would not give his name, but asked to see the honored old man.

The stranger was led to the old man’s room. The old man did not know this guest and asked for his name.

The stranger smiled, “I am an honest man. I have learned to live a good life. But it was not always so. Do you remember how you once asked me to come down from the roof-beam and eat your food?”

The host was amazed. He was even more surprised when he heard how his kindness had changed the thief into an honest man.

Nine-year-old Louis Pasteur rushed into the little house, his face white.

After many dangerous experiments on mad dogs, he finally found the answer. Just then a boy who had been badly bitten by a mad dog arrived at his lab. A few days after Pasteur's treatment the boy got better. He did not catch rabies.

The discovery gave new hope to people in many countries. People sent money to help build the Pasteur Institute in Paris. Today it is one the world's most famous centers for research.
